The Opportunity

Justice Sandra Day O'Connor Retires.

President Bush is now presented with the outstanding opportunity to shape the direction of the court for a generation by replacing O'Connor, the swinger, with a solid originalist/conservative justice. Miguel Estrada would be a great choice, but Bush will probably go with a woman. Too bad Janice Rogers Brown and Priscilla Owen had to wait so long to get on the appeals courts or they would have been eligible (realistically) for the spot. Thus, as a delaying tactic on SCOTUS nominations, the Dem filibusters worked.
